Calming My Soul and Nourishing My Spirit

Today I was in need of filling my soul with something good, something that would nourish me and calm me. So I took my son with me to the Nursery and filled our senses with the gift of flowers. I realize more and more that nature fills gaps of emptiness in my spirit. I don’t know if any of you feel empty at times, even if your life may be full in so many other ways, or if emptiness is only a part of the deep lining of depression that likes to surface unexpectedly in my life? Whatever it is, thankfully, nature is here for us.

As my son and I walked around the gardens, I was being pulled towards the roses. I’ve been wanting a rose bush for some time. I love their fragrance and how they calm your body when they fill your senses with their scent. I had no intentions of buying a bush today, and then I saw this wonderful plant, and decided I would give-in and bring this rose home with me today. I walked all around the roses, and this was the one that spoke to me. It is called a Day Breaker Rose.

After I brought the rose home, I kept looking at it, over and over again. I know it is beautiful, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it…why I am I so taken by this plant? And as the evening light began to transcend, I suddenly became aware of why this flower was soothing my soul. It reminds me of a sunset. The kind of sunset that fills the sky with it’s yellows, pinks, reds and oranges. I LOVE sunsets. The evening sky is my favorite part of the day. I have always loved twilight. It is the time of day when I feel like the light of the sky and the Divine are embracing creation with a warm peaceful love. And as the earth is embraced, I too am being hugged by this beauty and peaceful Love. And of course my spirit is being calmed. During sunsets I also discover a serenity that transcends me beyond myself and the emptiness I feel seems to disappear as I my body and spirit are filled with this beautiful light and color.

Now I get to see my sunset every day as my rose bush blooms. And my sunset will not just be something I wait for in the evening, but will fill me throughout the day.  I imagine my spirit will be well nourished.

How about you? What fills your empty spirit or nourishes your deeper longing?  I’d love to hear what helps heal your soul.

Please: Just Try to be Patient with ME!

It was one of those days. The kind of day when everyone needs you, kind of day. All you hear from the ends of every corner you try to hide in: “I need you, Mama!” And every time you get a moment of “alone-time” (which really is a figment of you imagination) the dog or cat come find you–and of course need to be pet or taken outside. So you literally want to scream! and of course catch the first plane to a secluded island of paradise, but you regain your senses and you grab a hold of the reins of your life: and you patiently respond: “Here I am. What do you need? How can I help you?”

I’m sure we’ve all had days and moments when it seems like no matter where we turn someone needs us or life is making us wait for something we hope will be better.  Whatever these moments are like they require our patience. Patience: that ‘wonderful’ virtue that life tells us to work at each day…well that is if we want to.

“Patience (or forbearing) is the state of endurance under difficult circumstances, which can mean persevering in the face of delay or provocation without acting on annoyance/anger in a negative way; or exhibiting forbearance when under strain, especially when faced with longer-term difficulties. Patience is the level of endurance one can take before negativity. It is also used to refer to the character trait of being steadfast.”    —Wikipedia

So as the day went on I did try and work at not being negative: I smiled, let my son climb all over me while I tried to type, played games, made dinner and all the usual housewife stuff with out getting angry at all…

Well, I guess I did show some frustration and raised my voice, a couple times. But I did wait it out until I got to boiling point—(which totally defeats the logic behind being patient). And then as quickly as I let it out, I put all those feelings of negativity and frustration aside and smiled again.

How are you with patience? Is it something easy or challenging for you?

When I used to go to work daily, I was really good at patience. I believed patience was defining of my character and I had to be flawless. No matter how rough or intense the situation was at work, I remained calm and serene.  I credited myself for this virtue. And people affirmed my ability to be patient.

But the problem was, I was so patient at work, i.e., I had a really high endurance for staying positive and calm even when I was frustrated or overwhelmed, that I didn’t release any of these feelings (frustration, etc.) during the day. So the negative feelings would show up at home when I felt annoyed about a house chore or responsibility; and these feelings would be released in the communication between my husband and I.  Which of course did not do wonders for our relationship.

Now that I have been away from my work environment for 8 months, I realize that although being patient at work was a virtue I prided myself on…I was not good at taking care of myself because I didn’t have a healthy outlet to release my exhaustion, frustration, or negativity that sometimes was welling up inside me while I was being patient. And I am reminded  that I am still not really taking care of myself because I experience these negative feelings when I’m at home from time to time, and I’m still not always good at creating an outlet to release them.

Do you have a way to take care of yourself when you feel exhausted from being patient?

Today I’ve come to realize that I can offer patience over and over, and continue to put on my smile for everyone, but if I am not taking care of myself while being patient, then I am doing no one a service. When I start feeling frustrated or I get impatient: wanting things to change right then and there, I get down on myself. For example, I often get the idea that I should be able to be all these things: a patient worker, a patient mother, a patient wife, a patient caregiver, a patient believer, a patient follower, etc.

But as I’ve been writing this I realize I’m doing the best I can, right? So if I have the patience for other people to be imperfect and I have the patience to wait for them to figure things out shouldn’t I offer the same kind of patience to myself? WHY OF COURSE I SHOULD. So there’s a bit of wisdom I’ve discovered. Now I just need to act on it.

What about you? Are you good at being patient with yourself when life isn’t going exactly the way you want it to, or when you just can’t seem to get life right? Are you able to provide yourself with compassion and patience while you are working on healing or recovery?  I’m going to work on all these things starting today.

We all deserve to love ourselves and one of the ways to do this is to offer ourselves the gift of patience. A gift of patience that says: “I’m not perfect, and there’s no way I can be. I am always healing, always learning, always growing…Learning to love myself and my life is an ongoing process every day.”

I truly believe that when we are patient with each other, and patient with ourselves: by allowing healing to take the time it needs to, by allowing ourselves to feel different emotions, and by allowing ourselves to take as much time to grow and develop as we need to, we will all be happier, healthier people. And Life in general will be a much more pleasant experience for us all.

So offer yourself the gift of patience.  And be well.

…and as I finish this post my son is running around the house and playing his drums…breathe…”Patience is a Virtue.” Breathe again. Smile. Amen.

He finally went to sleep. Now I get to edit. And the house is quiet. I really worked at being patient with myself and my son today, and it seems to be paying off. And my husband was patient with me tonight too, and said, “Go ahead and work on your post” while I clean up after dinner. Wow! What a gift. I guess being patient does pay off sometimes!

Your Glow is Still on My Life even after Death

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way, I will sacrifice
Now I’m living in your afterglow  —INXS Afterglow”

Whenever I lost some amazing person at the hospital I would listen to this song, and savor his/her memory. I often feel a  glow upon my life after a special person has died. Sometimes when people I cared for died, and I wasn’t there, they have come to my thoughts (even those who have suffered greatly) and tell me, they are okay, with a smile on their face. (This has actually happened to me a number of times.)

In my work as a spiritual counselor, people will often tell me stories about encounters they had had with a deceased loved one. Frequently, they will say, “I don’t know if you’ll believe me but…” And of course, I tell them I believe them. The power of the spiritual world and individual connection to it is very personal. I deeply believe that connection with the deceased does happen. It is real.

How about you? Do you ever feel the presence of someone you love, or dream about him or her? What has this experience been like for you?

I was moved to share this story with you because of Memorial Day*, but also because many of the people I follow and share in conversation with here, have expressed the loss/death of someone they have loved.

I invite you to open your heart and hold all those who are grieving right now in your heart, and send to everyone of them, and even to yourself if you  need it, a prayer of love and compassion.

I open my hands to catch your tears, and hold the sacredness of who you are and who you have loved within my arms. I ask the benevolence of the earth and all of creation to touch you with a gentle presence of grace in ways that you can understand and feel.

Whenever you need to be near the ones you love who have died, open yourself and ask them to be near you, and when you are ready to receive them I imagine they will find a way to be near you or to let you know what you need to hear.

Connecting Beyond the Boundaries of Space and Time

One of the best gifts of being a ‘blogger’ is meeting and connecting with people across the globe who share their wisdom, strength, pain, healing, inspiration, art and so much more.  In this day and age of the cyber-world, it is amazing how connected we can be with people we’ve never met before, and yet, they transform our lives and we are transforming theirs. I am so astounded by the heart-felt sharing that happens here in this little piece of the world I am apart of. And I again, want to say thank you! Each of you is a Blessing!

I am finding that in some ways, I am at a lack of words to express all that I want to say tonight. I realize that I am pretty drained right now—so much of my energy over the last few weeks was being consumed by the discernment I was personally and collectively undergoing about my family’s future. And I need a reboot.  All is well, now. We have figured out what we need. We have worked on being more affirming of the gifts we have, accepting challenges that aren’t always fun, and trusting more in our faith.

Thank you for the gift of your listening hearts and beautiful sharing.

In life we need each other. I know I have said this so many times before. But it is so very deeply true to who we are, as human beings. We yearn for connection, and it is the greatest source of tangible strength that we have—and at least in this day and age it comes not only through the person who sits beside us, or the pet we have, but through the words and messages of the people who grace our Blog page.

So give yourself a pat on the back, and know you are making a difference in someone’s life today.

Thank you for your incredible gifts!

Sending Your Needs into the Arms of the Universe & Receiving Love in Return

One of the most wonderful gifts of creation is the gifts of our pets. When we need a truly non-judgmental presence of Love, our pets are there to offer their unconditional Love. It certainly seems like there is truth in the belief that animals have a sixth sense…especially when you share your energy and love with them…they become uncannily in-tune with what you need. Yesterday, in the midst of my uncertainty I was graced by the Love of my cat, Max. He often comes and lays next to me in our bed, but yesterday he actually tried to sit on my head–as though he was saying, “Just relax your mind! Everything is going to be okay.”

The benevolent energy & love of the universe sent this little creature to be with me. I sent my need for a peace of mind into the arms of the Divine and creation. And my cat Max made sure I noticed that my need was being answered. In fact he was trying so hard to stay on my head, that I was having a hard time shaking him off. When I finally did get him to move, he came and sat right on my belly, and put his paws near my heart, and purred away—whenever I feel like my equilibrium is off it always comes from the center of my being.  So having my cat lay right in the center of my being and expressing his affection for me through his purring, centered me, and reaffirmed to me that, “Yes everything is going to be okay.” I just need to trust, and be open to being guided.

What has your experience of being Loved by your pet done for you in your life?

Life's Journey

Choosing the Right Path: Sharing Your Wisdom With Others

Sometimes good things fall apart so that better things can fall together.

                                                                                                     –Marilyn Monroe.

The last few days I have been navigating uncharted waters. I’m trying to figure out which direction to take on my current life journey, and  I am really unsure where the compass is trying to lead me. The needle is always supposed to face North, but somehow the electromagnetic pull is out of sync, and it’s leading me all over the place.  More simply stated: I’m not liking the idea of change in my life.

How about you? How do you deal with change?

I’m particularly good at dealing with change by being anxious. I get anxious about the unknown future ahead of me when big changes could possibly happen. And instead of being able to be right in the moment…LIVE FOR THE MOMENT…I’m already 2, 000 miles ahead of myself saying…BUT WHAT IF…? But I know this isn’t always the healthiest way to deal…

For those of you who’ve been with me on this journey, you have probably noticed I write when I’m anxious. It really does center me. And I really need grounding when I’m feeling lost.

I always come up with things to help me:

  • My biggest help often is my faith…or at least turning to the Divine and remembering, “For I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jer. 29:11).  These words are helpful to me, they are words that I turn to when I do feel lost or unsure.
  • Sometimes, it’s turning to Beauty, and Nature.
  • Sometimes it’s emotionally connecting to those I trust and Love.—being listened to, talking it out, recieving their points of view.
  • Sometimes it’s remembering how much my son &  pets trust that I will take care of them…and remembering that if my energy of love & care is being put into the universe, in return, I can only receive love and care back.

So, I want to say thank you to each of you, for sharing in my journey and for accompanying me with your support.

  • Where does your guidance come from when you are unsure of choices you have in front of you?
  • How do you discover which path to take?
I invite you to share your wisdom…it will be a gift to all those who search for answers like me.

For no one person can know all, that’s why we need each other, and have each other to share in the journey.–Bella Bleue

THANK YOU.

Connecting to the wonder we are, Inspiration

You Belong to Life.

You belong to Life.  Life belongs to You.

Today was a beautiful, sunny warm day in the Northeastern U.S.  It was the kind of day, where nature just draws you out—the Atlantic Ocean was beckoning  my family & I, and we followed its call to the shore. While we were there I took a few minutes and walked along the seaside with my toes in the water, alone. As I walked, I suddenly began to feel this strong sense of connection to the sound of the waves, and the water between my toes. I didn’t fully understand what my experience was saying to me, as I walked along, but I knew in my being , that this experience was grounding me to Life.

Have you ever been to the sea shore? What was the experience like for you?

**

I’ve been to the ocean many times over the last 12 years and have always enjoyed being there…but this time I felt like I began to belong to the sound of the waves….

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day in the U.S. It’s a day of celebrating all women who are mothers, who will be mothers, and remembering & celebrating our mothers who have died.

Being a mother myself, I was reflecting today, on who I am as a mother to my son…

Maybe that’s why the ocean sounds were so powerfully present in my being…

When we are living inside our mother’s womb we feel the sense of her rocking us as she walks along. And we hear sounds like the ocean waves day and night…the beating of her heart.

The song of the waves is connecting your body and self  to the natural world and at the same time is connecting you to where your Life began..in the womb.  The sounds of the waves remind us that we all began Life in the same way; i.e.; we are all connected to each other.  The ocean waves also reconnect us all to the deeper part of who we are—where we came from…where we began….

The sounds of the ocean embrace us, calm us, ground us & connect us to Life

Thus, if you ever feel disconnected from Life, you can listen to the ocean and allow your body to soak up it’s wonderful sounds…You will connect to the source of your Life—being in the womb—and begin to feel like you belong again…

The ocean sings to you, as the waves beat upon the shore, “You belong to all of creation, You belong to Life.”

And a gracious blessing upon all Mother’s of the World…

Blessings, Erin, Bella Bleue
